Moderator: Jill Hanley (Assistant Professor\, School of Social Work\, McG ill\, co-founder of the Immigrant Workers' Centre). The Live-In Caregiver program brings thousands of domestic workers to Canada on temporary work v isas each year to fill a labour market gap to provide care for children an d elderly persons. Mostly women from developing countries\, these caregive rs are required to live in the homes of their employers\, and their immigr ation status remains precariously tied to their jobs. The temporary status of live-in caregivers in Canada creates a context that leaves caregivers vulnerable to abuse and to denial of workers' rights. Is the live-in careg iver program an appropriate 'solution' to the childcare crisis in Canada? What can students and activists do in solidarity with live-in caregivers t o improve their working conditions? This event is presented by McGill HRWG -Immigration\, Radlaw & Women's Caucus.\n DTSTART:20080310T220000Z DTEND:20080311T000000Z LOCATION:Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1W9\, 3644 rue Peel SUMMARY:Opening the doors to rights for live-in caregivers: A critical disc ussion of Canada's live-in caregiver program URL:/channels/event/opening-doors-rights-live-caregive rs-critical-discussion-canadas-live-caregiver-program-29394 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
