The Government of Canada invests $51 million in McGill research

Yesterday, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, and the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health, announced over $1.3 billion in funding to support over 9,700 researchers and research projects across Canada. Included are 253 McGill projects, resulting in just over $51 million in funding to McGill research. This major investment includes funding through several key federal research programs:

Today the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) announced a record-breaking $660 million investment in discovery research, marking NSERC’s biggest annual investment through its Discovery Research Programs. Included in this milestone investment are 148 McGill research projects that received a combined total of $35.6 million in funding across several program streams, including Discovery Grants, Discovery Launch Supplements, Research Tools and Instruments Grants, and Subatomic Physics Discovery Grants.

This year’s Beatty Lecture bridged the worlds of arts and science, bringing together an Irish writer and a Danish evolutionary geneticist to discuss shared concerns, including balancing creativity with rationality and the importance of storytelling in both their fields.

For the fourth year, the lecture was emceed by Nahlah Ayed, host of CBC Radio’s Ideas.

Simon Caron-Huot, Professor and Canada Research Chair in High-Energy Physics, has been awarded a 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellowship. The prestigious fellowship is awarded by the Killam Trusts. Eight Fellowships were awarded across the country.

The Dorothy Killam Fellowship provides researchers with up to two years of relief from teaching and administrative duties to focus on transformative research that has potential to positively improve Canadian lives.
