Ìý

Founded in 1925 to serve the Irish Catholic population of Montreal, St. Mary’s Hospital has grown into a large community hospital that serves the multicultural population of the °äô³Ù±ð-»å±ð²õ-±·±ð¾±²µ±ð²õ area. It has long upheld a tradition of family physicians playing a central role in its healthcare services. In 1975, »ÆƬÀóÖ¦ÊÓƵ established a Family Medicine Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital to train future family physicians. Over time, the Family Medicine Centre has become renowned for its excellence in both patient care and teaching.

The St. Mary’s Family Medicine Residency Training Program is unique as the primary academic program within a moderately large hospital where family physicians deliver a wide range of services, from obstetrics and intensive care to emergency and comprehensive outpatient services. The close-knit collaboration between family physicians and specialists at St. Mary’s is recognized as a model of teamwork in Quebec’s healthcare system.

In 1974, the first cohort of Family Medicine trainees began their residency in the former nurse’s residence on the hospital grounds. In 2005, thanks to a generous donation, the facility was transformed into the Norma and Robert Hayes Pavilion, which now houses the St. Mary’s. Today, St. Mary’s FMG-U is a key clinical teaching centre of both St. Mary’s Hospital and the »ÆƬÀóÖ¦ÊÓƵ Department of Family Medicine.

With a mission to teach the principles of Family Medicine, St. Mary’s U-FMG provides exemplary primary healthcare and advances the discipline through active engagement in research and healthcare initiatives, locally, nationally, and internationally. The endowed chair in Community and Family Medicine has further enhanced scholarly activities and research potential at St. Mary’s.

Facilities and Resources

In 2024, St. Mary’s FMG-U underwent a space expansion, adding more exam rooms and a new teaching space to accommodate a 5th team of residents and staff. The updated teaching rooms are equipped with smart boards, enhancing the learning environment. The unit uses the MYLE electronic medical record system from Medfar Solutions.

Teaching resources include point-of-care ultrasound, primarily used in obstetrics, but also in the Musculoskeletal Clinic for ultrasound-guided joint injections. The Procedures Clinic offers dermoscopy, IUD insertion, endometrial biopsies, and removal of lumps and bumps. Trainees also have access to a small simulation center within St. Mary’s Hospital.

Teaching

The St. Mary’s U-FMG accommodates a cohort of 52 residents, along with medical students from all years, nurse practitioner trainees, and trainees in the allied health professions. Residents participating in Enhanced Skills Programs may also choose to continue providing continuity of care in their clinics. The program provides a learning environment where trainees engage with Family Physicians and a multidisciplinary team, including nurse practitioners, clinical nurses, social workers, nutritionists, lactation consultants, psychologists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists.

Trainees are exposed to a wide range of clinical experiences, including rotations in the Home Care Program, Skin Clinic, Procedures Clinic, Vaccination Clinic, Musculoskeletal Clinic, Breastfeeding Clinic, Youth Clinic, »ÆƬÀóÖ¦ÊÓƵborn Clinic, and Obstetrics Clinic. The curriculum uniquely includes small group sessions on advocacy, while residents are also afforded opportunities to teach and mentor — by supervising medical students and junior residents, as well as by leading ultrasound instruction and Practice-Based Small Group Learning sessions. Residents have their own roster of patients, and complete the majority of their hospital rotations at St. Mary’s Hospital, with additional training opportunities at long-term care facilities such as Mount Sinai Hospital, Jewish Eldercare Centre, and Father Dowd Home.
