Site Overview

The Lakeshore Family Medicine Clinic is strategically located within the Lakeshore General Hospital, a reputable community hospital that has been serving the West Island of Montreal since 1965. The hospital originally opened as an acute care centre, but has since evolved into a community hospital offering a wide range of services, such as palliative care, obstetrics, and a variety of specialised outpatient clinics. The hospital serves an estimated population of 377,000 with one of the busiest emergency departments in Montreal, receiving over 40,000 visits annually.

Established in 2020, our family medicine clinic started with a committed team of one doctor and one nurse, serving around 500 patients. Today, we have expanded into a robust team of 17 family physicians, providing care to more than 9,000 patients, with plans for further growth.

Our mission is to provide exceptional education and training to resident physicians in family medicine, emphasizing comprehensive care, innovation, and leadership. We are dedicated to fostering a patient-centered practice supported by evidence-based research while promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion. Our goal is to develop highly skilled, empathetic practitioners who are committed to enhancing health care at both local and global levels, with a particular focus on addressing the needs of the West Island community

Postgraduate Teaching

We are excited to be welcoming our first cohort of four family medicine residents in July 2025. As a developing GMF-U affiliated with »ÆƬÀóÖ¦ÊÓƵ, our site is designed to support high-quality, individualized residency training in a dynamic community-based setting.

Capacity: The residency program will launch with an initial cohort of four residents in July 2025, with plans to expand gradually. The program will ultimately accommodate up to 12 R1s and 12 R2s per academic year.

Curriculum:

  • Continuity of Care: Residents maintain their own patient panels and conduct weekly half-day clinics in the family medicine teaching unit throughout their two years. This continuity fosters long-term patient relationships and strengthens clinical decision-making.
  • Hospital-Based Rotations: Most rotations are based at Lakeshore General Hospital and include training in emergency medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics, psychiatry, geriatrics, palliative care, and hospitalist family medicine.
  • Academic Half-Days: While much of the curriculum is block-based, residents benefit from weekly inter-institutional learning through academic half-days held at a larger hospital site during the initial phase of the program.
  • Mentorship and Support: Each resident is matched with an academic advisor who provides ongoing mentorship, performance evaluation, and career planning support.

Site particularities:

Our postgraduate program is designed to prioritize learner development, adaptability, and support. What sets the resident experience apart:

  • Tailored Educational Pathways: With a small cohort size, residents benefit from close academic advising and individualized learning plans that reflect personal goals and clinical interests.
  • Collaborative Teaching Culture: Our residents are immersed in a collegial team environment where interdisciplinary collaboration and peer mentorship are central to everyday practice. Faculty are deeply invested in resident growth and professional identity formation.
  • Modern Learning Facilities: Opened in 2024, our modular teaching unit is bright, purpose-built, and conducive to both patient care and academic development.
  • Hands-On Skills Training: In addition to high-fidelity simulation, residents have access to an on-site procedure room for supervised practice of technical skills.
  • Community-Based and Hospital Training: While based at Lakeshore General Hospital, residents also gain experience at affiliated sites (e.g., Montreal Children’s Hospital for pediatrics). A personal vehicle is highly recommended to facilitate off-site travel.

Undergraduate Teaching
The Lakeshore Family Medicine Teaching Unit offers a rich and dynamic four-week rotation that immerses medical students in the breadth of comprehensive family medicine. We also accept students for two to four weeklong electives. Students gain clinical exposure through direct patient care in both general and specialized settings, with a strong emphasis on continuity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and hands-on experience.

  • Student Activities:
  • Participate in patient care within family medicine clinics, urgent care, and specialized services such as obstetrics, sexual health, and minor procedures.
  • Gain practical experience in preventive care, chronic disease management, and community-based health initiatives.
  • Work with a diverse patient population across the lifespan—from newborns to older adults—with varied medical and psychosocial needs.

Community and Engagement

Our Family Medicine Clinic serves the West Island of Montreal, a diverse suburban region with a population of approximately 236,000 residents. The community is notably bilingual (English-French), with a high proportion of families, a significant aging population, and a substantial number of immigrants. While generally affluent, the area includes pockets of socioeconomic vulnerability, emphasizing the need for accessible, comprehensive, and culturally sensitive care. Our clinic provides healthcare to patients from across the West Island and beyond, offering residents a broad, hands-on experience with individuals of all ages and medical needs. This diversity creates a rich clinical training environment that reflects the full scope of community-based family medicine.
